2011년 12월 김지원의 개인전 «바람처럼 Like the Wind» 이 하이트컬렉션에서 열린다. 이번 전시는 작가가 지난 몇 년간 유랑했던 섬과 해변 지역의 바다 풍경을 담은 페인팅과 드로잉 신작들을 소개하는 자리다.

김지원은 <그림의 시작-구석에서->(1994-2001), <정물화, 화>(1998-2003), <비슷한 벽, 똑같은 벽>(1998-2007), <맨드라미>(2002- ), <비행>(2002-), <이륙하다>(2002- ) 와 같은 작업을 통해 주변의 일상적인 사물과 공간을 다루어 왔다. 그의 회화 속 대상은 정물에서 공간과 풍경으로 옮겨갔고, 작가는 이를 가까이에서 때로는 거리를 두고 바라본다.

본 전시에서 소개되는 풍경화 작업은 작가가 본격적으로 풍경을 다루기 시작한 2008년 이후의 최근 작업들로 바다의 넘실거리는 파도와 물결 그리고 바람을 보여준다. 전시는 <낭만풍경>과 <풍경> 시리즈 페인팅, 과슈 드로잉 <무제> 시리즈로 구성되는데, 울릉도, 제주도, 우도, 거제도, 흑산도, 백령도와 같은 한국의 섬, 바다와 함께 지중해와 에게해의 바다를 만날 수 있다.

김지원 작업의 색감과 붓터치는 회화 속 대상의 존재와 회화 자체의 물리적 실재감을 드러내는데 이번 풍경화 시리즈에서는 바람의 결 또한 담겨 있다. 김지원은 초기 불교 경전 가운데 하나인 ‘수타니파타(Sutta-nipāta)’ 의 한 구절인 ‘그물에 걸리지 않는 바람처럼’을 언급하며 존재하지만 보이지 않는 바람, 바다를 바라볼 때면 언제나 마주치는 바람을 다루면서, 그가 경험한 시간과 공간을 그려내고자 한다.

전시와 함께 출간되는 김지원의 책 『바람처럼 Like the Wind』(사무소 출판)은 1980년대부터 현재에 이르는 작가의 전 작업을 망라하였고 작가의 글을 비롯, 평론가 강수미와 성완경의 글을 수록하여 김지원의 작업 세계를 보다 다각적으로 이해하도록 돕는다. 본 전시와 출판물을 통해, 그간 화가로서 그림과 그리기에 대해 지속적으로 고민하고 화면에 담아 온 김지원의 여정을 보여줄 것이다.

HITE Collection is proud to present Like the Wind, Kim Jiwon’s solo exhibition, open from December 2011. The exhibition will introduce new paintings and drawings of seascapes. These depictions of islands and coastal areas correspond to places the artist has wandered through for the past few years.

Through works such as The Beginning of Painting—In the Corner (1994-2001); Similar Wall, Same Wall (1998-2003); Still Life, Painting (1998-2003); Mendrami (cock’s comb)(2002- ); Flight(2002-); and Take Off(2002- ) Kim Jiwon has dealt with ordinary objects and the spaces of daily life. Progressively, the subjects in his paintings have shifted from still life to spaces and landscapes. The artist either observes these scenes up close or from a distance. The landscape paintings introduced in this exhibition date from 2008 and show the rolling waves of the sea and the wind. They include paintings from the Romantic Landscape and Landscape series, and the Gouache drawings—Untitled series, where viewers are offered a glimpse of the seas around the Korean islands of Ulleungdo, Jejudo, Udo, Geojedo, Heuksando and Baekryeongdo; as well as the Mediterranean and Aegean seas.
Kim Jiwon uses hues and brushwork to reveal a sense of the presence of the objects in the paintings as well as the physical presence of the paintings themselves. His recent landscapes, in particular, explore windswept patterns as well. Resembling the passage “like the wind that cannot be caught in a net” from early Buddhist scripture, Suttanip†ata, Kim Jiwon addresses the wind that exists but cannot be seen, this wind that always confronts him when he looks at the sea attempting to paint the time and space he has experienced.

Like the Wind, a publication accompanying the exhibition, presents Kim Jiwon’s work from the 1980s to the present, alongside writings by the artist as well as texts by art critics Sumi Kang and Sung Wan-Kyung. The publication opens out this artist’s work to more diverse readings. The intention behind the exhibition and publication is to present Kim Jiwon’s journey as an artist in a continuous contemplation and creation of art.
